New Times Broward-Palm Beach is an alternative weekly newspaper; it is part of the Village Voice Media chain. The paper split off from the Miami New Times in 1997, under the auspices of then editor-in-chief Tom Walsh. Walsh was succeeded by Chuck Strouse, who was replaced in 2005 with Tony Ortega. In March 2007, Ortega was appointed as editor-in-chief of the company's flagship paper, The Village Voice. In April 2007, Robert Meyerowitz was named editor-in-chief,[2] though he departed the following May to take an endowed chair at University of Alaska. In 2009, Eric Barton was hired as editor. The paper's weekly readership is 225,000.
The editorial staff is composed of Eric Barton (Editor); Deirdra Funcheon (Associate Editor); Reed Fischer (Music Editor); Matt Hendley (News Blogger), Lisa Rab and Stefan Kamph (Staff Writers); Melissa McCart (Food Critic); Mickie Centrone (Calendar Editor); and Betsey Denberg (Clubs Editor).
It has consistently uncovered corruption in South Florida, including stories that led to the ouster of a mayor in Pompano Beach, prompted former Gov. Jeb Bush to overhaul the massive North Broward Hospital District.[3] The newspapers' reporters have won hundreds of journalism prizes, including the Livingston Award for Young Journalists, the Sigma Chi Delta Award, the Gerald Loeb Award, Investigative Reporter & Editor (IRE) honors, and numerous AltWeekly Awards.[4]
